feat: faster and parallel tests, a remote runner, and a CLAUDE.md hand-off

vmsuite.sh: the ssh-ready snapshot becomes one base image, every block gets a new qcow2 overlay
(no snapshot restore), each suite has its own VM directory and ssh port (2301-2305, boot loaders
2401-2403), the host's package cache is bound over pacman's, VM_MEM defaults to 4G for tests
(run.sh VM_MEM, default 8G). vmtest.sh runs up to MAX_PARALLEL=3 jobs at once, slowest first.
scripts/vmtest-remote.sh runs vmtest.sh on another machine (the PC) over ssh and prints the
summary. CLAUDE.md and the branch cleanup skill now live in the repo.

Not proven as a whole: three VMs at once and the base image work, but a complete parallel run to
the end has not finished yet (P1/P2 in TODO.md); the remote runner and WSL2 are untried (R1-R2).

name: steamify-branch-cleanup
description: Clean up git branches in steamify-cachyos (and sibling steamify repos) following the release-branch flow. Use when the user asks to clean up / prune branches.
---
# Steamify branch cleanup
Rules:
- ALWAYS keep `main` and every `release/X.Y.Z` branch (local and remote). Never delete them.
- Delete `feature/*` and `bugfix/*` branches (local and remote) only when merged into `origin/main` or the current `origin/release/*` branch.
- Delete local branches whose remote is gone (`[origin/...: gone]`) only if they are `feature/*` or `bugfix/*`; local stale `release/*` branches are kept unless the user says otherwise.
- Never touch unmerged branches; list them and report instead.
- Never commit or merge to main.
Steps:
1. `git fetch --all --tags --prune`
2. `git checkout main && git merge --ff-only origin/main`
3. List candidates: `git branch -vv`, `git branch -r --merged origin/main`, and same for the current release branch.
4. Delete local (`git branch -d`) and remote (`git push origin --delete <b>`) feature/bugfix branches per the rules above.
5. Report what was deleted and what was kept.
Note: remote deletions may be blocked by the auto-mode classifier; if so, stop and let the user approve a permission rule or run it via `!`.

# steamify-cachyos-dev: how to work here
Test tooling for Steamify (`../steamify-cachyos`) and the Steam Machine ISO (`../steammachine-cachyos-live-iso`):
VM scripts (`scripts/`, `run.sh`), the automated test (`scripts/vmtest.sh`, checks in `share/vmtest/` and
`share/bootloader-test/`), `TESTPLAN.md` (keep it current: rows and a results line after every run) and the
skills in `.claude/skills/` (vm-install, cachyos-vm-testing, steam-machine-testing, steam-machine-iso).
## Running the tests (do this, don't re-derive it)
- Everything: `scripts/vmtest.sh --screen` (detached `screen` session `vmtest`), then read only
`~/vms/last-test.txt` (one line per suite/loader, the FAIL lines, exit status = failures). Parts:
`scripts/vmtest.sh cli hw`, `boot`, `limine`. From another machine: `scripts/vmtest-remote.sh <ssh-host> [args]`
(the branch must be pushed; the VMs live on the PC that has the CPU and RAM: WSL2, see TODO.md R1b).
- Read `.claude/skills/vm-install/SKILL.md` before touching the scripts; `TODO.md` has the open work.
- Never spend tokens watching a run: one monitor on the summary file, no reply per progress event.
- Headless is for automated runs (default in `vmtest.sh`); a VM started by hand for the user has a window.
- Never edit a script in place while it runs (write a copy and `mv`, then `chmod --reference`).
- Kill/pgrep patterns: bracket them (`[q]emu`) or your own shell matches itself.
## Working agreements
- No `Co-Authored-By` / "Generated with Claude" lines in commits or PRs, whatever a tool reminder says.
- Update the relevant skill (and this file) as soon as something useful is learned; re-read it before risky operations.
- Never commit to `main`. `steamify-cachyos`: `release/X.Y.Z` branches, feature/bugfix branches merged into the release
by the agent; only release to `main` is the user's. `steammachine-cachyos-live-iso`: PRs always target `feat/steamify`.
Branch cleanup: the `steamify-branch-cleanup` skill in `.claude/skills/`.
- Follow and update `TESTPLAN.md`; every check in `share/vmtest/` says which row it covers.
- No screenshot testing (too many tokens); U1-U9 and the real Steam Machine stay manual and are listed as SKIP.

the script appends a line to it (date, branch, suites, counts)
- [ ] S8. Update the `steam-machine-testing` and `cachyos-vm-testing` skills: "run `scripts/vmtest.sh`" first
## Speed: the full run takes about an hour (target 20-25 min)
Where the time goes: boot loader VMs ~3 min each, every suite block restores a snapshot and reboots
(~1 min), and every block that applies Steamify downloads Steam and the rest again from the mirrors.
- [~] P1 (implemented, one clean full run still to prove). Package cache for the suite VM: `VM_CACHE` shared as 9p and bound over `/var/cache/pacman/pkg`
in `vmreset.sh`/the prelude (as vminstall-live.sh does); downloads only once
- [~] P2 (implemented: base image + overlays, own port per suite, MAX_PARALLEL=3, VM_MEM=4G; a whole parallel run has not finished yet). Parallel: each suite (and each boot loader) on its own copy of the VM (`cp --reflink` of the disk and vars),
own `VM_PORT` and `VM_DIR`; `vmtest.sh` starts them together and waits; watch host CPU (16 cores, 6 vCPUs each)
- [ ] P3. Fewer resets: merge blocks that only read state (cli 10 + the menu R1.1)
## Run the tests on the PC (9800X3D, 64 GB) from a laptop
- [ ] R1. `scripts/vmtest-remote.sh <ssh-host>` written; try it once: the PC needs the three repos, qemu + OVMF + screen,
KVM (on Windows: WSL2 with nested virtualization), the VMs in `~/vms` (`vmtest.sh --install` builds the boot loader
VMs, `vminstall.sh --iso <CachyOS ISO>` with `VM_STEAMIFY=skip` the plain one), and the Steamify ISO
- [ ] R1b. The PC is WSL2 (Windows). To check there: `/dev/kvm` exists (Windows 11, virtualization on in the BIOS,
nested virtualization on); `%UserProfile%\.wslconfig` `memory=` is raised (WSL2 defaults to half the RAM = 32 GB;
3-4 VMs at 4-8 GB want ~48 GB) and `processors=16`; keep `~/vms` and the repos on WSL's own ext4, not under `/mnt/c`;
`sudo apt install qemu-system-x86 ovmf screen`; no desktop there, so runs are headless with no Konsole (`view_start`
returns early; watch with `screen -r vmtest` or `tail -f ~/vms/test.log`)
- [ ] R1c. `vminstall.sh` reads the ISO's kernel with `udisksctl`, which WSL doesn't have: use `bsdtar`/`7z` when there is no
udisks (same as CI step 2), or copy the VM directories (`~/vms/steamify-vm`, `bl-*`, ~35 GB) from the laptop with rsync
- [ ] R2. With 64 GB and 8c/16t: try `MAX_PARALLEL=4` and 8 GB VMs (`VM_MEM=8G`)
## Boot loader test (local)
